The holidays are my favorite time of year—decorations, family gatherings, and so much delicious food! But for Max and Lola, it’s a season of curiosity and a little chaos. I’ll never forget the year Max tried to “help” decorate the tree and ended up knocking it over, or when Lola got herself tangled in the tinsel. That’s when I realized how important it is to pet-proof my home for the holidays. Here’s what I’ve learned to keep your pets safe and stress-free during the festive season.
1. Secure Your Holiday Decorations
Pets, especially curious ones like Lola, can’t resist shiny ornaments and dangling lights. Use unbreakable decorations and secure them tightly to avoid accidents.
Pro Tip:
Avoid using tinsel—it can be dangerous if ingested. Instead, opt for fabric ribbons or garlands.
2. Be Mindful of Toxic Plants
Some popular holiday plants, like poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly, can be toxic to pets. If you have them in your home, keep them out of reach or consider pet-safe alternatives like artificial plants.
Max’s Story:
One year, Max sniffed a poinsettia a little too closely, and I had to call the vet. Thankfully, he was fine, but now I stick to pet-friendly décor!
3. Keep Food Out of Reach
The smell of holiday feasts is irresistible to pets, but many common ingredients are harmful to them. Chocolate, onions, and certain spices can make them sick, so be sure to keep food off counters and tables.
Quick Tip:
Create a “safe snack” area with pet-friendly treats to keep your furry friends happy while the rest of the family enjoys the meal.
4. Create a Quiet Space for Your Pets
With all the hustle and bustle of guests, your pets might feel overwhelmed. Set up a quiet room where they can relax, complete with their bed, toys, and a water bowl.
Why It Works:
It gives them a retreat where they can feel safe and calm, especially during loud celebrations like New Year’s Eve.
5. Watch Out for Wires and Candles
Twinkling lights and candles are beautiful but can be hazardous to pets. Keep wires taped down or hidden, and never leave candles unattended.
Bonus Tip:
Switch to flameless LED candles—they’re safer and look just as festive!
